Vocal Technique Workshop at Teesside University
Throughout the Summer Teesside University’s School of Arts & Media is offering a series of highly subsidised workshops and courses to those working in the region’s creative industries.
Learn how the voice works and how to apply these techniques to your professional practices:
Understanding Vocal Technique is a one day workshop which explores how the human voice works and how an understanding of these principles can be applied to vocal performance and teaching.
Singing teacher, performer and workshop leader Rebecca Pedlow will demonstrate the different capabilities of the voice, exploring such subjects as it’s physiology, different voices and what happens when a voice breaks. These theories will be applied through a series of practical sessions throughout the day.
Rebecca will focus on essential breathing and posture exercises and demonstrate how vocal warm ups relate to vocal technique. Variances in different styles of singing will be investigated as she demonstrates the different approaches to the likes of folk, pop, opera and musical theatre.
Find out about further training opportunities and how you can earn money from your skills:
The workshop will culminate in a careers and personal development session where delegates will be signposted to further training and potential job opportunities. Understanding Vocal Technique delegates will leave with an awareness of the skills they need to develop to become a better performer or teacher. The workshop is ideal for performers, singing teachers, instrumentalists, community musicians, school teachers/assistants or anyone wishing to be introduced to, or have more understanding of, how the voice works.
One-off Highly subsidised cost – Book your place now:
The Understanding Vocal Technique workshop takes place in Teesside University’s Phoenix Building on Saturday 21st August from 9.30am – 4.30pm. It is being subsidised by ECIF and Talent Solutions funding and is therefore offered at an introductory price of £49.99 (usually £170.00) to North East based SME businesses, freelancers and sole traders. Please call for eligibility information.
To book your place please contact James McDermott on 01642 738 089 or Email: j.mcdermott@tees.ac.uk

New ‘Zine on Teesside
Hi, I’m James. I’m a writer and filmmaker based on Teesside, and me and my friend Gus Hughes, artist, illustrator and all-round lovely man, have made a zine called The Story of Grass.
It’s an A5 photocopied collision of art, comedy and bewilderment which grew out of a desire to make a physical product, something nice you can hold, and read, then roll up and stick in your back pocket for later.
We’re really pleased with the way it turned out, and we’re already busy working on issue 3 (we started with #2 as we didn’t want the pressure of making a really good issue one).
We’ve been selling it for £3 at gigs, comic shops, galleries and events around the region, and the response so far has been amazing.
We’d love it if more people made their own magazines – all you need is paper, pens, ideas, access to a photocopier and a stapler and presto! Your own little slab of culture and a testament to your own obsessions which you can distribute in any way you see fit.
If you’d like a copy of our zine, visit this most excellent online shop: http://thestoryofgrass.bigcartel.com/product/the-story-of-grass-2
And if our zine doesn’t sound like your thing, you can try Estelle by AJ Garrett and Alyson Agar, an underground-style comic about an elderly New York cartoonist and the demon she befriends:
And if neither sound like your thing: make your own thing!

‘Dwelling’ Photography exhibition
‘Dwelling’ is a series of photographs by Newcastle based photographer Dee Chaneva.
The images were shot in her native Bulgaria, at her grandparent’s house, following her grandfather’s death.
‘Dwelling’ is a beautifully rendered mediation on grief, loss and memory. The images document Dee’s grandmother’s desperate need to hold on to the memory of her husband by the objects and space they shared, for fear of losing the memory of him all together. These are possessions not just as precious things, but as necessary things. Read the rest of this entry »

ScMART Exhibition
A unique exhibition will run at Middlesbrough’s Python Gallery from Feb 18th to March 12th featuring the work of staff at Teesside University’s School of Computing
School of Computing staff at Teesside University work in a variety of fields, meaning they are able to teach drawing and computing skills which combine traditional 2d drawing and painting skills to create conceptual computer created imagery, mostly based on and for the computer game industry.
Staff continue their art-practice as part of their on-going research and they have produced, for this exhibition, a collection of eclectic work, including photography, drawing, painting, sculpture and animation.
Featured in the exhibition is what is believed to be the world’s first 3D print of a ‘Mandelbulb’ and also Maggie Parker’s seminal works, ‘Infinity’ and ‘Torus’. These pieces are impossible to make in the ‘real world’ due to their complexity of shape, only being able to be manifested in the ‘real world’ by recreating them using a 3d printer.
The retiring Dean of the school, Derek Simpson says “This exhibition, to be held at the Python Gallery, Middlesbrough, is an excellent opportunity for both academic and ancillary staff to consolidate their status as artists in both the public’s and students’ eyes and disseminate this work into the larger community”.
