Throughout the Summer Teesside University’s School of Arts & Media is offering a series of highly subsidised workshops and courses to those working in the region’s creative industries.

Learn how the voice works and how to apply these techniques to your professional practices:
Understanding Vocal Technique is a one day workshop which explores how the human voice works and how an understanding of these principles can be applied to vocal performance and teaching.

Singing teacher, performer and workshop leader Rebecca Pedlow will demonstrate the different capabilities of the voice, exploring such subjects as it’s physiology, different voices and what happens when a voice breaks. These theories will be applied through a series of practical sessions throughout the day.

Rebecca will focus on essential breathing and posture exercises and demonstrate how vocal warm ups relate to vocal technique. Variances in different styles of singing will be investigated as she demonstrates the different approaches to the likes of folk, pop, opera and musical theatre.

Find out about further training opportunities and how you can earn money from your skills:
The workshop will culminate in a careers and personal development session where delegates will be signposted to further training and potential job opportunities. Understanding Vocal Technique delegates will leave with an awareness of the skills they need to develop to become a better performer or teacher. The workshop is ideal for performers, singing teachers, instrumentalists, community musicians, school teachers/assistants or anyone wishing to be introduced to, or have more understanding of, how the voice works.

One-off Highly subsidised cost – Book your place now:
The Understanding Vocal Technique workshop takes place in Teesside University’s Phoenix Building on Saturday 21st August from 9.30am – 4.30pm. It is being subsidised by ECIF and Talent Solutions funding and is therefore offered at an introductory price of £49.99 (usually £170.00) to North East based SME businesses, freelancers and sole traders. Please call for eligibility information.

To book your place please contact James McDermott on 01642 738 089 or Email: j.mcdermott@tees.ac.uk

Rebecca Pedlow has spent the past 20 years working as a singing teacher, workshop leader, Arts Manager and Project Leader. She studied music (BSc Hons Degree) at The City University, London which included vocal tuition at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Following a brief career in Film and Video Post Production in Soho in London, she worked as a professional Opera Singer with The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, and as a session singer recording Musicals at Abbey Road Studios. She has taught singing and led choirs with Greenwich Community College, The Sage Gateshead, Middlesbrough Council and College and leads the Stockton Silver Singers at ARC, Stockton.

Hi, I’m James. I’m a writer and filmmaker based on Teesside, and me and my friend Gus Hughes, artist, illustrator and all-round lovely man, have made a zine called The Story of Grass.

It’s an A5 photocopied collision of art, comedy and bewilderment which grew out of a desire to make a physical product, something nice you can hold, and read, then roll up and stick in your back pocket for later.

We’re really pleased with the way it turned out, and we’re already busy working on issue 3 (we started with #2 as we didn’t want the pressure of making a really good issue one).

We’ve been selling it for £3 at gigs, comic shops, galleries and events around the region, and the response so far has been amazing.

We’d love it if more people made their own magazines – all you need is paper, pens, ideas, access to a photocopier and a stapler and presto! Your own little slab of culture and a testament to your own obsessions which you can distribute in any way you see fit.

If you’d like a copy of our zine, visit this most excellent online shop: http://thestoryofgrass.bigcartel.com/product/the-story-of-grass-2

And if our zine doesn’t sound like your thing, you can try Estelle by AJ Garrett and Alyson Agar, an underground-style comic about an elderly New York cartoonist and the demon she befriends:

http://sozboz.bigcartel.com/

And if neither sound like your thing: make your own thing!

‘Dwelling’ is a series of photographs by Newcastle based photographer Dee Chaneva.

The images were shot in her native Bulgaria, at her grandparent’s house, following her grandfather’s death.
‘Dwelling’ is a beautifully rendered mediation on grief, loss and memory. The images document Dee’s grandmother’s desperate need to hold on to the memory of her husband by the objects and space they shared, for fear of losing the memory of him all together. These are possessions not just as precious things, but as necessary things.

The Artist says, “After my grandfather’s death, the driving force behind everything that ever moved in that house was gone and a thick layer of grief, dust, lethargy and melancholy seems to have covered the beds, the chairs and one can even smell it on the curtains. My grandmother fears anything and everything that might shake up the delicate arrangement and preservation of her husband’s possessions and the little traces he’s left behind”.

In ‘Dwelling’, the artist presents what was once a home as a tomb or mausoleum, no longer a place of companionship. The images are presented with the keen, thorough eye of an archivist. The images often seem detached and trivial as we see the last tangible remains of a life reduced to photo frames and ornaments. Yet as we are presented with more work it becomes increasingly claustrophobic and acutely painful to look at, like the bittersweet sting of loss itself.

‘Dwelling’ is deeply moving and will surely strike a chord with anyone who has experienced grief and loss, or is interested in beautiful, thought provoking photography.

Dee Chaneva is currently studying in her second year of Photography at Newcastle College. This project was shot during the summer of 2009.

The exhibition’s opening reception will take place on Wed, March 31st from 7 pm.

As the last blast furnace on Teesside ceases production, a new exhibition of previously unseen steelmaking images can be seen at the Dorman Museum in Middlesbrough.
Over 40 woodblock prints have been brought together for this unique exhibition, including 15 depicting the process of making steel.

The unusual subject matter is the work of Yorkshire artist Viva Talbot (1900-1983), who created the images during the 1930s when it was almost unknown for women to be allowed access to the steelworks.

During her lifetime Viva created hundreds of woodblock prints. This exhibition, developed by Dr Joan Heggie, a Research Fellow at Teesside University, also contains personal items such as sketch books, photographs and even one of Viva’s diaries.

The exhibition can be seen from Tuesday 30 March to Sunday 18 July, at the Dorman Museum, Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough. Admission is free.

Free public lecture
Dr Joan Heggie will also give a public lecture about the exhibition at the museum on Thursday 17 June.

The chance discovery of these prints in 2006 generated a new research interest for their finder, Dr Heggie, who was initially unable to find any information about Viva Talbot.

Her name was absent from reference books and it was a mystery why and how she had gained such privileged access to the steelworks. Since then Dr Heggie has spent every spare minute piecing together the story of Viva Talbot, her life and her art.

Viva was the daughter of Benjamin Talbot (1864-1947), inventor of the Talbot tilting furnace which transformed the Open Hearth method of producing steel. Benjamin Talbot, originally from Shropshire, came to Teesside at the beginning of the 20th Century. Having spent a decade working for iron companies in America, Talbot brought new ideas back to England at a time when they were much needed.

He became involved with two companies in particular – Cargo Fleet Iron Company (Middlesbrough) and the South Durham Steel & Iron Company (Stockton) – both of which are possible locations for the steelmaking images. In 1925, he became Managing Director of both companies and Chairman of the Board in 1940.

Viva Talbot married Thomas Nussey in 1941 and within a few years she became Lady Nussey when Thomas inherited a baronetcy from his father.

Only three and a third pages a day…are you game?

Meeting spots so far include Blu Bar in Middlesbrough, ArtsBank in Saltburn, and the Cleveland Theatre School in Billingham, and we’ll be equipped with props, projectors, music, books, written challenges and provisions to keep competitors inspired and on track. Go to www.facebook.com/writersblockne for further information about times, locations, and how to get involved – and to http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/scriptfrenzy for more info about the scheme as a whole.

There’ll be a performance event in a local gallery space in April, where attendees will also participate in a collaborative story – again, keep a look out on Facebook for further details. The theme of the story is ‘Can you see in the dark?’ and – ‘Consequences’ style – contributors will only be able to see what the person before them has written when adding their line. So, effectively, we’ll be building a story as a region.

The story will then be transferred on to a paper-based sculpture being constructed in the window of Writers’ Block by local Artist Peter Heselton – in a pen only visible in the dark – and a projector will shine on to the sculpture, tracking the transition between day and night.

The performance event will be accompanied by a book swap. Attendees will be asked to come with a book they’ve finished with, and leave with a new one. And the first Writers’ Block ‘zine – containing a diverse range of brilliant pieces from Writers’ Block members – will be distributed for the first time.

This week will also see the release of 3 competitions – the first for 2 short plays created around the theme, ‘Can you see in the Dark?’ – to compliment the art work; the second for parodies of a book, film or television programme, where winners will work with a local puppeteer to create the characters and a local film maker will shoot and edit the piece; and finally a short film competition where entrants will be asked to generate ideas based on a Sherlock Holmes-type character solving mysteries in Teesside. The winning script will be shot across one weekend and screened as part of the ‘Discover Middlesbrough’ festival in September. The plays and puppet shows will be screened at the Writers’ Block launch event in June.

We’re still on the look out for cast, crew and interested parties for all of these pieces – sign up to the Facebook group and get involved!

A unique exhibition will run at Middlesbrough’s Python Gallery from Feb 18th to March 12th featuring the work of staff at Teesside University’s School of Computing

School of Computing staff at Teesside University work in a variety of fields, meaning they are able to teach drawing and computing skills which combine traditional 2d drawing and painting skills to create conceptual computer created imagery, mostly based on and for the computer game industry.

Staff continue their art-practice as part of their on-going research and they have produced, for this exhibition, a collection of eclectic work, including photography, drawing, painting, sculpture and animation.

Featured in the exhibition is what is believed to be the world’s first 3D print of a ‘Mandelbulb’ and also Maggie Parker’s seminal works, ‘Infinity’ and ‘Torus’. These pieces are impossible to make in the ‘real world’ due to their complexity of shape, only being able to be manifested in the ‘real world’ by recreating them using a 3d printer.

The retiring Dean of the school, Derek Simpson says “This exhibition, to be held at the Python Gallery, Middlesbrough, is an excellent opportunity for both academic and ancillary staff to consolidate their status as artists in both the public’s and students’ eyes and disseminate this work into the larger community”.
