Known to many for his extensive contributions to THE OSCAR-WINNING FILM “COLD MOUNTAIN”, multi-instrumentalist Tim has one of the most hair-raising voices in American music. He transforms American tradition with his northern roots sound, New England ballads and haunted originals. I met Tim in Middlesbro in the 90s when he was touring with his seminal band Cordelia’s Dad and I shot this video for them: click here to watch

About the Speaker

Linda is a senior lecturer in history in the School of Arts & Media and specialises in modern urban and social history including 18^th- and 19^th- century urbanisation and the development of mass consumption.

Linda undertook our  MA Local History and it was that experience which taught her about Middlesbrough and also, she believes, made her into a local historian. Her postgraduate work on Middlesbrough’s Victorian suburbs became an exhibition at the Dorman Museum, and she continues to write and talk about the various buildings and building types that we find all around us.  

Lecture Content

In this our 80th anniversary year, Linda will examine the architectural history of the University Campus in Middlesbrough. This visual presentation will seek to showcase Teesside University with its architectural history, which includes some of the finest examples of their type and time.

The day long set of seminars, demonstrations and Q & A panels will give delegates the very first opportunity to benefit from a wide range of companies and individuals involved in the most up to date 3D techniques, skills and productions within the industry.

The event should enhance delegates knowledge of the in depth technical aspects of 3D, Producing in 3D, 3D Post Production, 3D Rigs, Converting 2D to 3D and 3D Visual Effects as well as having the opportunity to ask questions in two separate Q and A panels over the course of the day.

As well as the 3D Day, the Production Guild, is hosting a seminar on the use of weapons on set, held at BAFTA on 17th June.

A specialised networking event and showcase of some of the best creative talent in the north (& south!). Design led products on sale from both emerging and established artists and designers from all around the country, selling directly to the public minus gallery shop and boutique mark-ups!!

The first event and concept of its type in the area, Designers Marketplace has been successfully running for nearly two years and now supports over 90 creative businesses from around the country, primarily the north. Providing a support system of networks and a platform in which to launch new businesses, ranges and collections.

Our events attract between 500 to over a thousand visitors on a day of an event giving much scope to trade and also to make business contacts within industry.

Through our networking point everyone is invited to post business cards, ‘looking for’s’, collaborations, job offers, other creative events and activities. Stall vendors, press, local businesses and creative organisations are offered the opportunity to informally network, view the fully stocked showcase of talent and discuss creative ideas with like minded people.

We have a section allocated to the mashing up of words and pictures…As an artist, illustrator, doodler…pair up with a piece of writen work from one of Writers Block many a talented writers/poets and illustrate their words.

You could write your own six word story, or do both yourself. Pencil, pen, paint, photograph, embroider, interpretive dance (maybe not that last one) – the best results will be printed for posterity in a collaborative zinejam manner which will be showcased at the Christmas Designers Marketplace and of course a credited copy to yourself!

Our doors will open at 1pm for a prompt start at 1.30pm and the event will run til 5.30pm. So far confirmed guests include representatives from the BBC Writersroom North, Northern Film & Media and Live Theatre. After a short break, celebrations will continue at Blu Bar, a few doors along from the Writers’ Block on Albert Road, from 7.30pm. Here there will be a series of performances by an amazing line up of local talent, as well as a range of writing challenges (look out for the helium balloons) to keep us busy ‘til the doors close at 10.30pm. This will be a great opportunity to network, meet other creative people from the region, and to find out more about Writers’ Block and what we’re all about. How would you like to ask the stars of such shows as ‘Eastenders’, ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Byker Grove’ questions about their careers and the shows they worked on?  Well you can because actors from all three shows will be appearing at Sunderland University in a special ‘Industry Talks’ event organised by Sunderland film production company S.H.A.M. Films.

‘Byker Grove’ would have been celebrating its 21^st birthday this year if the BBC hadn’t cruelly pulled the plug on the popular show which launched the careers of some of our much loved tv personalities including Ant and Dec, Jill Halfpenny, Donna Air, Dale Meeks and glamour model Francoise Boufhal. 

To celebrate and for one time only some of the stars are being re-united in front of an audience to chat about their time on the show, how they got started, what it was like on set and what they are up to now.  Providing tips to aspiring actors and answering questions will be Lyndyann Power (nee Barass) who played the ginger haired ‘Spuggy’, one of the most loved and remembered characters in the series, Holly Matthews who played Emma Miller before going on to have a brief pop career with chart busting hit ‘Little Miss Perfect’ under the name of Summer Matthews for Sony Records before then playing teenage bully Leigh-Anne Galloway in BBC1’s ‘Waterloo Road’ as well as Joe McCabe who played the humorous Kevin McLaughlin.

‘Doctor Who’ actor and tv presenter Andrew Hayden Smith who himself started out on ‘Byker Grove’ will be hosting the event and talking to the actors in front of a live audience.  Audience members will get a chance to ask him and the stars questions directly in a Q + A session.

Also appearing will be special guest Pooja Shah, former star of ‘Eastenders’, whose cv also boasts the hit film ‘Bend it like Beckham’ alongside Hollywood starlet Keira Knightly and recently seen with Pauline Quirk in ‘Missing’ to talk about her acting career.  Pooja recently won a ‘Best Actress’ Award at The Rob Knox Film Festival for her role of Rajinder in the film ‘No Honour No Choice’ which was shot in the Northeast and directed by S.H.A.M. Films’ Garry Moore.

If you are an aspiring actor and want to find out how to break into the industry, how to get an agent or how to avoid the many pitfalls this is the event for you.

Film director Garry Moore who runs S.H.A.M. Films hopes to organise more events like this one to bring in top actors, producers, directors and other showbiz people, putting them in front of a live audience where they wouldn’t normally be accessible to the public to offer advice and tips on all aspects of film and tv.

Centre Square, Middlesbrough Wednesday 9th June

Concept Film Night will be at the Big Screen in Centre Square, Middlesbrough (near MIMA) for the first time.  Showing some fantastic short films from talented Northeast film makers, including work from multi award winning writer/director Richard Fenwick, Middlesbrough born Tom Marshall and a favourite of mine ‘Pocket Thief’ from writer Craig Rutherford and director Scott Mann.  Plus we’ve got some short animations in the line-up and much more.

There will be limited seating provided so please feel free to bring along picnic chairs/blankets, there will be a stall selling soft drinks and you may bring your own food.

Why not come along and enjoy this FREE outdoor event and take in some of the lovely british summer evenings,  even if it rains there’s always umbrellas.
