The Northern Region Film and Television Archive (NRFTA) was founded in 1998 as a consortium of four organisations which already held significant film collections. It contains over 36,000 hours of moving image material relating to the history, landscape and people of the North East Region of England.

IdeasTap, a creative network and funding body for emerging arts talent has announced that it is offering eight IdeasTap members £5,000 each to realise creative projects that either address green issues or are produced in an environmentally sustainable manner.

IdeasTap are looking for ideas that offer exciting new angles on climate change – or new ways to make art in an eco-friendly fashion. It doesn’t matter what medium you work in – from film to theatre, photography to visual arts, music to poetry – Ideas Fund Green is open to all creative disciplines. The key is innovation.  Applications can be submitted by individual Ideas Tap members or on behalf of groups of individuals work together. Pojects must take place between September 2010 and March 2011.

The PRS for Music Foundation has announced the launch of New Music 20×12 as part of London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. PRS are looking for 20 brand new musical works, of outstanding creative excellence, each lasting 12 minutes. PRS have up to £10,000 available for each of the 20 commissions and each of these will be broadcast round the world on BBC Radio 3.  Open to composers, ensembles, festivals and music organisations that have a proven track record of being able to successfully promote, produce and host new commissions. The deadline for applications is the 1^st October 2010.

Grants to Help New, Innovative Visual Arts Projects (UK)

The Elephant Trust offers grants of up to £2,000 to artists and institutions (priority is given to small organisations and galleries) for new, innovative visual arts projects based in the UK. The next deadline for the submission of applications is 28th June 2010.

4iP Awards (UK)

UnLtd, the charity for social entrepreneurs has announced that it has teamed up with Channel 4 to launch of a new funding scheme (4iP) to help individuals turn their digital media projects into a reality. Grants of up to £5,000 are available to help individuals develop early stage digital media ideas and prototypes and to turn these prototypes into social businesses. There are two themes that 4iP is looking to support. These are; using the web and mobile to keep an eye on how government, organisations and elected representatives use their power; and exploring how digital tools, games, applications; and services can help people change their lives for the better whether that’s their health, wellbeing, finances, work/life balance or dealing with unemployment. The Film Fund is the production and development heart of the UK Film Council. We support filmmakers in the UK who are emerging or world class and capable of creating distinctive and entertaining work.

The Film Fund is our new unified production and development fund dedicated to British filmmaking.

Blind Eye, a film written and directed by Laura Degnan and produced by RS Productions, has been accepted into the Palm Springs International Shortfest.

The Palm Springs International ShortFest runs from 22 – 28 June and will present more than 300 short films from over 40 countries. The festival is one of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences qualifiers for the best short at the Oscars.

Laura says of the film’s acceptance, “We’re thrilled that Blind Eye has been selected to play at the Palm Springs Shortfest – that’s basically Hollywood, right?? We’re really proud of the film and this opportunity to show it to a large audience means a lot to us. Thank you to NFM and the Film Council for all your support getting us there!”

Agnes Wilkie, Creative Industry Director at Northern Film & Media says, “It is wonderful news that Blind Eye has been accepted into such a prestigious and renowned festival. Our Stingers short film scheme aims to act as a platform for new and emerging talent in the North East, and to take that talent to a wider audience.  We are delighted that Laura has been given an international arena to showcase her work and we wish her the best of luck in the festival.”

Our doors will open at 1pm for a prompt start at 1.30pm and the event will run til 5.30pm. So far confirmed guests include representatives from the BBC Writersroom North, Northern Film & Media and Live Theatre. After a short break, celebrations will continue at Blu Bar, a few doors along from the Writers’ Block on Albert Road, from 7.30pm. Here there will be a series of performances by an amazing line up of local talent, as well as a range of writing challenges (look out for the helium balloons) to keep us busy ‘til the doors close at 10.30pm. This will be a great opportunity to network, meet other creative people from the region, and to find out more about Writers’ Block and what we’re all about. No tickets are necessary for the evening event. Just turn up on the night! AND WE REALLY MEAN IT WHEN WE SAY THAT ANYBODY IS WELCOME – EVEN IF YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT BEING CREATIVE FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME!

This June, the weird and whimsical world of The Story of Grass takes over Peg Powler Gallery.

‘The Story of Grass’ is an acclaimed new zine (DIY small press magazine), a collaboration by humorist James Harris and artist Gus Hughes featuring pages of bits, bobs, hippos, muppets, jokes, pictures, Abraham Lincoln, giant eyeballs, this and that. Already building a cult following based of the first edition, a brand new issue of The Story of Grass will be launching at this exhibition.

Expect art, words, fun, and the unexpected.

Plus the not so unexpected in the form of cake, cups of tea, the drawing table and all the other usual Peg Powler features.
